How long is a session?

For family and children shoots, about an hour, give or take. Young children lose attention after a while so we get on with it promptly and get the shots that you want, family groups, individuals of the kids etc, and then there is often time to be a little ‘creative’ at the end. Kid In A Cube shoots are approximately 45 minutes.

What shall we wear?

Good question, see the ‘clothing advice’ on this page. It is up to you of course, but please have a think about how you ‘see’ yourselves. Jeans and matching tee shirts? or a bit more smart and formal? In studio, a change of clothes is great, a second top, or a different dress…! Kids - maybe a second fancy dress outfit, Batman, or Princess..!

Do we need to bring anything else?

Not necessary, but maybe a prop or two for the kids. A favourite toy, or teddy. Not for every photo, but maybe for one or two.

Anything else?

Please arrive 10 minutes early for your booked session. Timings are important. If you are unavoidably late kindly phone ahead and we may have to re schedule.

What happens afterwards?

We will make an appointment for you to come and have a personalised viewing of all your photos. Usually the following week, which will last about an hour. You are welcome to a tea or coffee, and relax as you watch a slide show of the shoot, followed by an in-depth look at your favourites and how to put them together in collections or individuals, hand made frames and wall presentations, desktop or even album ideas if you wish.

Can you put our photos online for us to choose at home?

In general, no. We are running a business and an average complimentary shoot has several hidden hours behind the scenes from marketing to post editing, and all we ask is that clients come in for their viewing and see the full range of what we have to offer. This can not be done online.

Who should come to the viewing?

It is important all people involved in the decision making about what to buy and how you’d like them are present. All price lists are heavily discounted on this first viewing, so it is best to be business like and make decisions you will be happy with. Please bring a means to pay for your final order. The preferred way is our payment system via pay pal. A free photograph or digital download offered with a promotion is dependant on attending a viewing.

Do I have to buy?

No. This is a friendly and relaxed viewing and sales experience, helping you to make decisions, so if you decide not to buy any of your photos at all, there is no obligation. If you come back later however, you will be on the full price list. The average spend with Light In The Black is £450.00. But of course people spend on their photography precisely  NOT TO BE AVERAGE.

Do you offer loose prints or digital copies?

Not as a rule. This photo experience is about beautiful hand made, finished framed products in an amazing variety of presentations. Ready to hang or place, ready to enjoy. However, there are some products and collections that include a USB with high or low res. images.

How soon can I receive my finished photo products?

We will get busy straight away, making your frames and you can expect to receive them within 4 to 6 weeks. However it is often sooner.

CLOTHING ADVICE FOR SESSIONS

Beautiful and memorable portraits don't just happen they are carefully planned. But we can only accomplish this with your help. Please take a few moments to discuss clothing and colours, which will bring everything into line for memorable and personalized results.

Here are some key points to remember when deciding what to wear.

* Keep it simple.

* Solid Colours are best. Try and avoid large or Bold Patterns and bright colours. They draw attention away from the face.

* Long Sleeve dresses and shirts are recommended. They draw attention away from the arms and focus it on the face. Short sleeves are acceptable for infants etc.

*Co-ordinate your attire from head to toe, carefully selecting appropriate shoes and stockings, as we may take some full-length portraits.

* Darker clothing tends to minimize body size and lighter tones tend to emphasize body size

* Necklines are important, a Vee or scoop neck is best if your neck is short and your face is full. A turtle neck or, high necked is more flattering if your neck is longer and your face is slender.

* Dress everyone in the same style of clothing; do not mix casual and formal attire.

* Keep the tonal range of clothing within the group the same. Do not mix light and dark values. Save patterns for accent items like scarf's and ties.

* White or light pastel clothing, shoes, stockings trousers, or dresses look best in portraits taken against white or light background save stronger colors or patterns for accent items.

* To assure a successful portrait, it is best to bring along several additional clothing choices.
